Engine Break-In Guide
These are generic guidelines for breaking in a new or rebuilt engine, such as those in Porsche vehicles, to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Whether you are breaking in an aircooled or watercooled Porsche engine may require following different procedures. Always speak to your engine builder before carrying out the initial start and break-in, and be sure to follow your engine builder's recommendations. Proper break-in seals the piston rings and prepares moving parts, based on two effective methods. Follow these instructions carefully, and note where approaches differ.
Why Break-In Matters
Breaking in an engine is critical to achieve a strong ring seal, which prevents pressure leakage and ensures power output. Modern engines have finer cylinder surfaces and advanced manufacturing, requiring specific break-in techniques to maximize performance and minimize wear within the first few miles.
Break-In Procedures
Prime the engine for oil pressure using the appropriate procedure, then run the engine for 20–30 minutes with no load to fully warm up and break in the cam and lifters/rockers and related parts, keeping within a safe temperature limit. Piston rings will not begin to break in until a load is applied. If leaks are detected, shut down, fix them, and restart this cam and lifters/rockers break-in step.
If you have not replaced the camshaft and/or lifters or rockers, you can skip this step and proceed to seating the rings, once you get the engine warmed up and you've verified you are leak free.
Two methods offer effective break-in approaches after the initial warm-up, with some differences in execution. Choose based on your setup and preferences.
Initial Running
After the warm-up, continue with one of these options to start piston ring break-in. Do not use wide open throttle (WOT) until the engine is fully warmed up.

Subsequent Break-In
After the initial run, shut down the engine and change the oil to remove debris. Adjust valves (if applicable), then restart and idle to make adjustments. Continue with one of these options. Again, do not use wide open throttle (WOT) until the engine is fully warmed up.

Replace the oil filter with each oil change, using a compatible filter for your setup. For additional engine protection, consider adding a filter magnet and a magnetic drain plug.
Additional Tips
- Avoid running the engine in a garage before the first ride, as it may prevent full ring seating due to lack of load.
- Change oil soon after the initial miles (e.g., 20, 100, or 1000) to flush out metal debris from wear.
- Do not use synthetic, semi-synthetic, or friction-modified lubricants during the initial break-in; switch only after the piston rings are fully seated.
- For safety, accelerate on straightaways and decelerate early for turns, especially on the street.
- Monitor valve clearances regularly (if applicable) and address tightening valves as a sign of potential failure or possible overheating.
- Incorporating several full thermal cycles between rounds of engine break-in will further improve results.
