Adjusting VW Type 4 Hydraulic Lifters

Adjusting VW Type 4 Hydraulic Valve Lifters

This procedure covers cold-engine lifter preload adjustment on Volkswagen Type 4 (VW Bus, Porsche 914/912E) engines with hydraulic lifters.

Prerequisites & Notes

  • Engine must be cold (lifters fully retracted).
  • Hydraulic lifters bench‑bled and filled with oil (see bench‑bleed guide).
  • Pushrods and lifter bores clean and lubricated.
  • Use lock‑nuts or elastic‑stop nuts on rockers if available.

Tools & Materials

  • 10 mm & 13 mm wrenches or sockets
  • Socket extension
  • Torque wrench (7–9 lbf·ft / 10‑12 N·m)
  • Feeler gauge set (for zero‑lash check)
  • Ratchet or breaker bar (for crank rotation)

Adjustment Procedure

  1. Position #1 Cylinder

Rotate crank by hand until #1 piston is at TDC on its compression stroke (both valves closed).

  2. Prime Lifters & Pushrods

Ensure lifters are fully extended (bench‑bled). Coat pushrod tips with oil and insert.

  3. Set Initial Contact

On each rocker, turn adjuster nut until you feel resistance (lifter plunger contacts cam). A slight clunk confirms contact.

  4. Apply Preload

Turn rocker nut an additional ¼–½ turn (about 1–2 flat turns) to preload lifter—no visible gap.

  5. Tighten Lock‑Nut

    Hold adjuster and torque lock‑nut to 10–12 N·m (7–9 lbf·ft).

  6. Rotate to Next Cylinder

Follow firing order 1 – 4 – 3 – 2 . Rotate crank two full turns to bring the next cylinder to TDC compression.

  7. Repeat

Perform steps 3–6 on each cylinder in firing order.

  8. Verify

After all four, rotate engine three full revolutions; recheck adjusters for correct preload and tightness.

Troubleshooting & Tips

  • Lifter clatter: Re‑bleed lifters; ensure no trapped air.
  • Excessive lash: Add another ¼ turn preload.
  • Miss on one valve: Recheck adjuster torque and proper position at TDC.
