Why should you use a magnetic drain plug?
Most modern engines and transmissions are no longer fitted with magnetic drain plugs from the factory, often directly a result of cost cutting measures. In fact, some gearboxes and differentials are advertised as not needing service as they are filled with “lifetime fluids,” so you can see why we don’t always think manufacturers have our best interests in mind.
As the engine and transmission components operate, they naturally experience wear and tear. This process generates metal particles and debris that can circulate within the system, potentially causing harm and accelerating component degradation. A magnetic drain plug acts as a magnet, attracting and capturing these ferrous metallic particles before they cause significant damage. This helps prevent undue stress on sensitive parts and preserves the precision engineering of complex modern powertrains, so it’s easy to see why you should add one.

A magnetic drain plug can serve as an early warning system for potential mechanical issues. By capturing harmful metal particles, it helps maintain cleaner engine oil and transmission fluid. Cleaner lubricants reduce friction, leading to less wear on critical components such as bearings, pistons, and gears. Prolonging the life of these components not only saves money on costly repairs but also ensures your engine and transmission perform optimally throughout their lifetime.
Installing a magnetic drain plug in your engine and transmission is a straightforward process that requires no modifications. Likewise, if your engine is fitted with a spin-on oil filter with a steel body, you can even add a FilterMag oil filter magnet, which further helps to trap ferrous debris in your filter and keep it out of your engine.
If you are unsure how often you should be changing your engine and transmission fluids in a street driven car, following manufacturer severe service intervals (if provided) is recommended. In lieu of a severe service protocol, you can safely cut the normal service intervals in half. During the warranty period, it’s often best to use factory approved lubricants, just in case you have a warranty issue. However you an rest assured that fitting an aftermarket magnetic drain plug will not void your warranty, as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents manufacturers from voiding a vehicle warranty or denying coverage because of aftermarket parts. Once you are outside of the warranty period, you’ll find that there are likely better lubricant choices than the factory fill. We use and recommend Driven Racing Oils almost exclusively.
When inspecting the plug during routine maintenance, any excessive metal shavings or debris collected on the magnet may indicate abnormal wear or part failure. Early detection of these issues allows you to address them promptly, preventing further damage and ensuring your engine and transmission remains in top-notch condition. Be sure to also cut open your oil filter and inspect that as well. If anything of concern is found on the magnetic drain plug or in the oil filter, you might consider dropping the oil pan to allow for a closer inspection.
Given its significant benefits, the cost of a magnetic drain plug is minimal. Incorporating it into your regular maintenance routine is a smart investment, even if you do regular used oil analysis. As a rule of thumb, used oil analysis only looks at particles you can’t see, whereas a magnetic drain plug will trap large particles missed when testing your oil.
